Shopping in Madeira: What to Buy & Where to Shop in Funchal

Shopping in Madeira Island: What to Buy & Where to Shop in Funchal

When you visit Madeira, you’ll find the typical souvenir shops that sell magnets, socks, and t-shirts. However, one of the things I enjoy most when traveling is discovering shops by local designers, places where you come across things you won’t find anywhere else.

As a local Madeiran, I always prefer bringing home something with a story rather than another generic souvenir.

If you’re visiting Madeira for the first time, my 16 Do’s & Don’ts in Madeira is a good place to start, especially if you want to avoid some of the common mistakes visitors make.

If you’re looking for something more personal than a typical souvenir, visit SOU in Funchal’s Old Town. SOU is a Madeiran clothing brand inspired by the island’s nature, culture and way of life, with collections designed in Madeira and made with a focus on quality and longevity. If you want to take home something genuinely connected to Madeira, but still wearable long after your holiday, this is one of the shops I’d recommend.

Address: Rua de Santa Maria 63, Funchal.

Key Takeaways

  • Funchal is the main shopping hub in Madeira, especially its historic centre and pedestrian streets. You can explore most of these streets on foot, especially if you’re staying in central Funchal. If you’re still deciding where to stay, have a look at my guide to where to stay in Madeira.

  • Local shops offer authentic Madeiran food, wine, crafts, fashion, and design.

  • Many of the best shopping areas are walkable around the historic center.

So, I set myself the goal of showing my readers special gifts from Madeira (either for yourself or for someone you enjoy giving meaningful presents to) that are the result of Madeiran creativity, ranging from clothing and accessories to handmade products.

I also love returning home and, whenever I look at one of these pieces, having a story to tell. Being able to associate it with a moment in my life or with the person who gave it to me. After all, this is one of the pleasures of traveling: finding objects that tell stories and, over time, gain sentimental and timeless value.

1. Patrícia Pinto

Patricia Pinto studied Fashion Design and Communication at IADE in Lisbon.
She created the brand “Patricia Pinto” and since 2003, she designs individual collections. I love her clothes, tricot accessories, colorful details and the handmade quality of her creations. Her shop is a delight, with an interior garden and a very unique style; talent, charm and friendliness as only Patricia has. Don’t miss it!

2. SOUS

SOUS is a slow-fashion brand created by Madeiran fashion and textile designer Mariana Sousa.
I love her timeless, creative, handcrafted women’s wear and the way each piece reflects Madeira’s natural beauty and cultural spirit.
If you enjoy discovering unique, design-led fashion, this Concept Store is one of the places I wouldn’t miss in Funchal.

3. Lillie Ceramics

The Lillie sisters run a pottery studio and shop called Lillie Ceramics just behind Mercado dos Lavradores, in Funchal. Together they make ceramics inspired by Madeira’s landscapes, mostly tableware, using the potter’s wheel and painting by hand. This place is so beautiful, combines talent, soul and happiness in a work studio/shop where customers are welcome.

So if you’re looking for a special gift from Madeira, this could be the perfect gift! They also make customized gifts for a special occasion, person, or pet!

5. Nini Design center

Last but not least, Nini Design Centre is one of those places in Madeira that instantly leaves an impression. Set inside a historic fortress overlooking Funchal Bay, the location alone makes it worth the visit. Inside, you’ll discover a beautifully designed space that blends contemporary design, culture, and lifestyle, complete with a restaurant and bar.

Created by Madeiran world-renowned designer Nini Andrade Silva, who has earned multiple international awards and national honours, this is without a doubt a must-visit destination for anyone interested in design. Even if you’re not planning to buy anything, it’s worth visiting for the architecture and views over Funchal.

Each visit is a dynamic experience, allowing visitors to admire award-winning furniture designs up close. In the shop, you can also get a glimpse into Nini’s personal stories, through family pictures or magazine covers, while browsing carefully curated pieces such as ceramics, t-shirts, hats, and other design items.

Main Shopping Streets in Funchal (Where to Walk & Browse)

Funchal’s best shopping areas are concentrated in its city centre, making it easy to explore on foot.

  • Around the Farmer’s Market, there’s Armazém do Mercado with the lovely RESTOCK art gallery.

  • Rua do Aljube, Rua da Alfândega and Rua do Sabão – charming streets with local shops and cafés,  ideal for traditional and cultural shopping

  • Rua João Tavira, Rua da Queimada de Cima & de Baixo – independent stores, cafes, restaurants and creative spaces.

  • Rua dos Ferreiros holds interesting shops such as Fundação Livraria Esperança, one of Portugal’s oldest book stores, and Gaudeamus Shop, offering a range of products including University of Madeira merchandise and tickets for events like Madeira Classical Orchestra concerts. It’s also a starting point for selected walking tours. Nearby there’s Madeira’s Handicraft Shop, where you’ll find Wicker it, (earrings, bags and utensils made from wicker work). You can also join their workshops.

You can explore most of these streets on foot, especially if you’re staying in central Funchal. The historic centre is compact, and wandering between the main shopping streets is part of the experience. If you’re still deciding where to stay, have a look at my guide to where to stay in Madeira.
