Porto Santo trails – Vereda do Pico Branco and Terra Chã

Last weekend, we took a trip to Porto Santo. We were in need of its peace.

We walked from the boat to the hotel Praia Dourada – 40 minutes walk by the sea. We could see the reflection of the moon in the ocean, listen to the waves and see stars in the sky. We even sang along a few Queen songs (since we recently saw the Bohemian Rhapsody movie).

On the next morning, our deserved rest arrived. We were deep in sleep after a busy week. Despite the 19ºC outside, there was wind and some rain, so we thought twice if we would do the Vereda do Pico Branco and Terra Chã – and I’m happy we went.

How to get to Pico Branco and Terra Chã?

To get at the trail’s beginning, you can drive to the path’s entrance, via Portela. It is easy to find – you’ll see a sign and place for parking. To get there from the centre of Vila Baleira, it´s about 15 minutes drive by car and by taxi it costs about 14 euros.
The Pico Branco and Terra Chã are both accessible by this path. It takes about 2 hours to get to Pico Branco, and then we go back to reach the house of Terra Chã (400 meters). We then take the same return route to the parking lot.

It is not easy to find adjectives that do justice to the beauty of this place – charming, irreverent, unexpected, magical …
Enchanting because the trail surrounds the peak and we get glimpses of the mountains, the cliffs, the beach, the sea, and the beautiful hills.
Irreverent, because it is a tour of contrasts. There are some ascents and descents, which are made either with light tracks or tough steps. It’s like life (somebody said). It has the shade from trees and offers strong emotions, overwhelmed by the contours of the rocks, unexpected sights and vertiginous passages where your heart beats faster. Although it’s not too difficult overall, it has some unprotected areas, which deserve special care – we went with a guide.
Magical – because Porto Santo has this ability to calm your soul.

There was still time for a stroll around the center and a walk on the beach.

As a friend of mine said a few years ago, no one should visit Madeira without discovering Porto Santo’s nature.

Passeios no Porto Santo – Vereda do Pico Branco e Terra Chã

No passado fim de semana, fizemos uma escapadinha ao Porto Santo. Estávamos a precisar daquela paz.

Fizemos o percurso a pé, do barco até ao hotel Praia Dourada – 40 minutos a conversar à beira-mar, a ver o reflexo da lua no oceano, a ouvir as ondas e a procurar estrelas no céu.

Quando na manhã seguinte, não ouvimos o despertador tocar, percebemos logo que o descanso tinha chegado. Estávamos ferrados no sono, depois de uma semana atribulada.

Apesar dos 19ºC que se faziam sentir, havia vento e alguma chuva, por isso pensamos duas vezes se faríamos a Vereda do Pico Branco e Terra Chã – ainda bem que fomos.

Como chegar à Vereda do Pico Branco e Terra Chã?

Para lá chegar, podemos ir de carro até à entrada da vereda, via portela. É fácil encontrar o início do percurso, onde há ainda um local para estacionamento. Do centro da Vila Baleira até lá, são cerca de 15 minutos de carro (de táxi custa cerca de 14 euros).

O Pico Branco e a Terra Chã são ambos acessíveis por esta vereda. Demoramos cerca de 2 horas para chegar ao Pico Branco e depois voltamos para trás, para chegar à casa da Terra Chã (mais 400 metros). Fizemos depois o mesmo percurso, no regresso ao estacionamento.

Não é fácil encontrar adjetivos que façam justiça à beleza deste local – encantador, irreverente, inesperado, mágico…

Encantador porque os caminhos contornam o pico e vislumbramos a serra, as falésias, a praia, o mar, e as belas curvas das montanhas.

Irreverente, porque é um passeio de contrastes. Tem algumas subidas e descidas, que se fazem com passos ora leves, ora carregados. É como a vida (alguém dizia). Tem sombra de árvores e emoções fortes, assoberbadas pelos contornos das rochas, vistas inesperadas e passagens vertiginosas, onde o coração bate com mais força. Apesar de não ser muito difícil no geral, tem algumas áreas desprotegidas, que merecem especial cuidado – fomos com um guia.

Mágico – porque o Porto Santo tem esta capacidade de nos acalmar o espírito.

Ainda houve tempo para uns passeios pelo centro e caminhada na praia.

Como dizia um amigo meu há uns anos atrás, ninguém deveria passar pela Madeira sem conhecer também a natureza do Porto Santo.
