Kids will love watching the huge cruise ships arrive and depart, while parents can enjoy an easy stroll, a quick run by the ocean, or a peaceful break with sea views right in the city center.
2. Cabo Girão Skywalk – Câmara de Lobos
The largest cable in Europe seen from a balcony with a glass bottom. Superb views over Funchal and the Ocean. Not to be missed! 👉
3. Rua de Santa Maria (Painted Doors) – Funchal (Free)
Take the family for a colorful stroll along one of the oldest streets of Funchal, Rua de Santa Maria, a free and lively street famous for its painted doors. 5. Carreiros do Monte Toboggan Ride – Funchal
A Madeira classic! A fast, fun ride down the hill in traditional wicker sledges.
You can buy tickets at the station, or book a Curral das Freiras Tour + toboggan combo in advance to save time in queues, especially in high season and with kids.
6. Hop on a bus tour around Funchal
Climb aboard a fun and easy sightseeing bus tour right in the heart of Funchal at Avenida do Mar by the Marina, a super convenient starting point for families. Kids will love riding on the open-top bus while parents enjoy the views, and everyone can hop off anytime to explore playgrounds, gardens, cable cars, or grab a treat before jumping back on for the next stop.
7. Catamaran Dolphin & Whale Watching – Funchal
Madeira is one of the best places in Europe to see dolphins in the wild.

Easy, short and rewarding, great for kids of all ages. It lasts for 1 hour (round trip) and allows the observation of the highest peaks of Madeira, as well as birds such as bis-bis and the rare pigeon trocaz.

One of Madeira’s most beautiful areas, with waterfalls and lush nature.
32. Levada Walk: PR-9.1 a walk for everyone
Flat, short and perfect for a family picnic at the end. Easy levada walk and accessible to children of all ages. It takes about 1 hour to complete.
You can also arrange a transfer to Queimadas Park, a beautiful starting point surrounded by lush forest and fairy-tale scenery, perfect for families. If everyone is feeling energetic and ready to walk more, you can continue on the famous PR 9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde, a well-maintained trail suitable for many families, leading through tunnels and greenery to an impressive waterfall.

Madeira Aquarium consists of 12 display tanks, where the various “habitats” of the Madeiran marine world are represented. The largest tank has about 500 00 liters of salt water, in which it is allowed to dive.

42.Revolving Restaurant Quebramar- São Vicente
This is one of the few revolving restaurants in the World. It has a room that provides visitors a fascinating view of the entire North Island coast, alternating views between the sea and the high mountains of São Vicente. Taste the “Romaria” Soup! Delicious!

Besides the traditional shops in Funchal, shoppings centres are usually a good option for families, due to baby-changing facilites.

Yes. Madeira is very family-friendly, with safe towns, good healthcare and plenty of outdoor activities.
What are the best things to do in Madeira with kids?
Some of my favourite family activities include:

Are boat trips and whale watching safe for children?
Most whale and dolphin watching tours and catamaran cruises are suitable for families,
and you’ll usually see other children on board. For babies and toddlers, I suggest choosing calmer days and shorter tours. Always check the tour information for age recommendations before booking.
Is the toboggan ride from Monte suitable for small kids?
The Carreiros do Monte toboggan ride is a unique experience but it’s quite fast. It’s usually better for older children that enjoy a bit of speed. With very small kids, you might prefer just taking the cable car to Monte and visiting the gardens there.
What can we do in Madeira with kids on a rainy day?
On rainy or very windy days, I recommend indoor attractions such as the Madeira Story Centre, the CR7 Museum, the Whale Museum in Caniçal, or the
3D Fun Art Museum for fun.
Is Porto Santo worth visiting with children?
