Built first as a wooden outpost in the early 1600s, it was later rebuilt in stone and developed into a strategic stronghold overlooking the city.

Over the centuries, it served different roles, from military fortress to  naval communications centre, known locally as Pico-Rádio.

Today, it stands as a Monument of Public Interest and one of Funchal’s most impressive historic landmarks.
