I don’t know about you, but I’m starting to feel a little tired of the same bucket lists. Not because the places themselves aren’t beautiful or worth visiting. They are! PR1, Pico do Arieiro at sunrise, the 25 Fontes trail, Fanal forest… they’re all wonderful in their own way.
But sometimes I wonder if our obsession with ticking off lists (myself included) makes us forget something equally important: to simply experience a place. Perhaps that’s also why some places have become so crowded. Everyone is chasing the same photo, the same viewpoint, the same itinerary, often without leaving much room for surprise or curiosity.
After living in Madeira for more than forty years, I’ve come to realize that what I love most about this island isn’t a list of attractions. It’s the little things. Taking the old scenic road instead of the highway. Stopping because the light is beautiful. A warm bolo do caco…
So this isn’t another bucket list. It’s an invitation to slow down, notice, and perhaps, somewhere between the famous viewpoints and the hidden roads, to discover your own little joys and the moments that make Madeira special to you.

British Columbia Travel Guide: Vancouver, Whistler & Vancouver Island
Snow-capped mountains, endless forests, vibrant cities, and some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Canada.
There are places that impress us. And then there are those that completely capture our hearts from the very first moment.
British Columbia, on Canada’s west coast, was one of those places.
Throughout this trip, I visited Vancouver, Whistler, and Vancouver Island—three very different destinations connected by one extraordinary feature: an incredible relationship with nature.
Vancouver Island: The Best Part of British Columbia?
After spending several days in Vancouver and Whistler, we headed to Vancouver Island.
The journey began aboard BC Ferries, traveling from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo.
The crossing takes approximately one hour and forty minutes and was one of the most beautiful ferry journeys I have ever experienced.
Along the way, the ferry passes countless forest-covered islands, creating landscapes that seem straight out of a nature documentary.
The largest island on North America’s west coast (larger than Jamaica) contains some of the world’s last remaining temperate rainforests, wild beaches, dramatic cliffs, and abundant wildlife.
Our final destination was Tofino, a small coastal town famous for its beaches, surfing culture, and laid-back atmosphere.
The beaches seem endless, with forests stretching almost all the way to the sand. The Pacific Ocean displays its raw power here, and the sunsets are unforgettable.
While in Tofino, I joined a beach yoga class, a popular activity in the area.
Practicing yoga to the sound of crashing waves while surrounded by such incredible scenery was one of the most relaxing experiences of the trip and the perfect way to embrace the slow pace of this coastal town.
What I’ll Remember Most
When I think back on this trip, it’s not only the places I remember. It’s the feeling.
The peace of Whistler’s forests. The energy of Vancouver. The wild beauty of Vancouver Island. The constant contrast between city life and nature.
Canada reminds us of something we often forget: the world is still full of places capable of surprising us.
British Columbia has a rare ability to slow us down and help us appreciate what truly matters.
And perhaps that’s exactly why it became one of the most special places I’ve ever visited.

The Sea to Sky Highway between Vancouver and Whistler is considered one of North America’s most scenic drives and is part of the experience itself.
You can also take your rental car aboard BC Ferries to Vancouver Island, making it much easier to explore places such as Nanaimo and Tofino.

What started as a simple food truck has become a local institution. The fish tacos are legendary, but honestly, anything on the menu is a great choice after a day exploring the coast.

Even during summer, Whistler’s après-ski culture remains very much alive.
After a day hiking, biking, or simply exploring the area, many visitors finish the day on a patio or in a pub overlooking the mountains.
Black’s Pub is one of the best places to experience that atmosphere, offering a relaxed setting and one of the most popular outdoor terraces in the village.

If you enjoy shopping while travelling, Tsawwassen Mills Outlet is one of the best places in the Vancouver area.

Bookstore Recommendation: Mermaid Tales Bookshop

June is when Madeira truly starts to feel like summer.
The days are longer, the evenings are warmer, and there’s a different energy across the island. The terraces are full of people, and weekends become all about sunset gatherings, live music, and watching fireworks light up the bay of Funchal.
One of the highlights of the month is the Atlantic Festival, a much-loved tradition that combines music, culture, and spectacular pyromusical shows every Saturday night in Funchal. It’s one of those events that both locals and visitors look forward to every year.
Beyond the fireworks, June is packed with cultural events, such as screenings by the sea, opera performances under the stars, and live music celebrating Atlantic roots.

Atlantic Festival & International Fireworks Competition
One of the highlights of June in Madeira is the Atlantic Festival’s International Fireworks Competition. For consecutive Saturdays, Funchal Bay becomes the stage for breathtaking pyromusical shows, where music and fireworks are perfectly synchronized.
Each show lasts approximately 20 minutes and can best felt around the praça do mar ou the marina, creating an unforgettable summer atmosphere.
In 2026, countries will compete for the prestigious “Troféu do Atlântico”, awarded by a jury, and the “Troféu Madeira Tão Tua”, chosen by the public.
The competing countries are: Canada, China and Ukraine.
Visitors can vote for their favourite performance at Plaza Madeira Shopping Centre, the Tourist Information Office on Avenida Arriaga, or directly at Funchal Pier on the night of each show.

If you’re looking for the perfect way to end a day in Funchal, head to the Mercadinho Sunset de Verão.
Set near Praça do Povo, this relaxed outdoor event combines food stalls, local drinks, live music, and one of the best sunset views over the bay. It’s the kind of place where you can arrive for a quick drink and end up staying for hours.

Most of the time, I start with Skyscanner. It’s still my favourite website to compare flights because it gives a very good overview of prices and possibilities.

The “Everywhere” option is great if you’re flexible and just want inspiration or the cheapest destinations available during a specific month.

One thing I really like is that the calendar highlights cheaper days in green, which makes it easier to adjust dates and save money.
Because Madeira residents have flight subsidies for travel to mainland Portugal, I also keep all options open:

Why I Usually Book Directly With the Airline
Once I find the best option on Skyscanner, I almost always book directly on the airline’s website. For example:

How I Book Apartments
When I’m looking for more comfort while travelling, especially if I want a kitchen to prepare meals, more space, or I’m travelling with family, I usually search for apartments instead of hotels.
I like Airbnb because it allows me to read reviews from previous guests in a more personal way, and there are often apartments there that you won’t find on Booking.com. I also tend to find more authentic places and neighbourhoods where locals actually live, which makes the experience feel more connected to the destination.
That’s also one of the reasons why I created my own Airbnb, I wanted to offer a more local, original, and authentic experience to people visiting Madeira.
When I travel alone, I sometimes choose the option of renting just a room through Airbnb. It’s usually more affordable, and I can better understand who I’ll be staying with through reviews, photos, and location. Often, it also creates a more natural connection with the local community.

Meet the minds behind Madeira Unlocked – Simone & Andy
A couple of years ago, I found myself at a lively Cologne Carnival party hosted in an old pub in the heart of the old town. I had gone along on a friend’s recommendation, not expecting much more than a fun evening but instead, I walked away with something far more valuable: a meaningful connection.
That’s where I met Simone and Andy.
From the very first moment, they stood out, warm, open, and genuinely interested in connecting. As it often happens, mutual friends quickly brought us closer. A close friend of mine already knew Simone well, and through another shared connection, Mountain Alex, we ended up exchanging ideas about social media, life on Madeira, and the growing community on the island.
Fast forward to today, and Simone and Andy are now the minds behind Madeira Unlocked, an app designed to solve a simple but real problem: how do you keep track of everything happening on an island full of events? Their answer? Build a app that brings it all together.
So without further ado, let me introduce you to Simone and Andy.
1. Tell us a bit about yourselves.
Simone and I have been married for over 20 years and, over time, we’ve both followed quite diverse professional paths.
Simone completed a degree in business administration with a focus on tourism management, alongside vocational training in hotel management. She then gained professional experience in the business sector, including organizing and running international recruiting events. After starting a family, she chose to dedicate several years to raising our two amazing sons. Later, she decided to pursue a new professional path, completed a degree in education, and went on to work as a committed primary school teacher.
I studied business informatics and worked for many years as a management consultant and in leadership roles. At one point, I also ran a live music club in Cologne, which was a very different but incredible experience.
2. What captured your attention about Madeira?
My connection to Madeira actually started during Covid. After months of working from home, I was looking for a place where I could combine work and a change of scenery. That’s when I came across a “home office villa” concept on Madeira.
To be honest, I had no real idea where Madeira was exactly… I even thought it was a Spanish island somewhere between the Canaries and the Balearics. What attracted me was simply the idea of working remotely from a nice location. What happened next was even more unexpected…
About two weeks into my stay, I caught Covid and had to leave the villa. I found a beautiful Airbnb apartment in Funchal instead and instantly fell in love with it and the view. Then came the real turning point: just two days after moving in, I found out that the entire property, including the Airbnb unit, was for sale. So, I called Simone and said: “I think I found a house for us.”
At that point, we weren’t even looking for a house. I had only been on the island for about two and a half weeks, and Simone hadn’t even been to Madeira yet. Long story short: two months later, the house was ours.
After about two and a half years of commuting back and forth between Germany and Madeira, we eventually made the decision to fully relocate and start a new chapter here on the island.
From the very beginning, it was clear that Madeira is something special. The combination of mountains and ocean, the lush and diverse nature, the mild climate all year round and especially the people make it a truly unique place. People here are open, welcoming, and easy to connect with.
And what we both really love is how much is constantly happening. There’s always something going on, music, sports, cultural events, or simply opportunities to meet new people.
3.If a friend visits Madeira for the first time, where do you take them?
We’ve had quite a lot of friends and family visiting us over time, and honestly, it always depends a bit on who’s coming.
With families, for example, we like to keep things relaxed and varied. We usually go for easy, family-friendly hikes. São Jorge is a great option, especially because you can combine it with a swim. We also love visiting some of the island’s stone beaches or bathing complexes, and of course, spending time in Funchal.
In Funchal, one of my personal favorite spots is Santa Catarina Park. On the way there, we usually walk through the Zona Velha and stop at one of the many great cafés or grab some ice cream. We also love heading down to Praia de São Tiago, it’s a perfect spot for a quick swim, especially in the evening. The market hall is always worth a visit as well, but we also enjoy showing more hidden corners like the Armazém do Mercado gallery, Praça do Carmo, or places like Arbor Café.
For friends who love hiking, we often choose routes that are a bit off the beaten track. One of our favorites is the loop from Prazeres down to Paul do Mar, over to Jardim do Mar, and back up to Prazeres. Another great one is a circular hike in Faial combined with a swim at Cascata Água d’Alto. Something that almost always goes down well is playing padel — ideally at Quinta Magnólia, followed by a snack or drink afterwards. It’s one of those activities that nearly everyone ends up enjoying.
We also like to integrate our guests into our everyday life here. That often means joining events like the Saturday Workout with Madeira Friends, the Sunday Pastry Run, boardgame nights, concerts around the island, or even volunteering with CASA, where we help rescue food from hotel buffets and distribute it to people in need. It’s always a very special experience and something that has resonated with every guest so far.
4.What inspired you to create Madeira Unlocked?
To be honest, the short answer is: I’m getting older 😉
But seriously, it started quite simply. After doing around 40 hikes on the island, I realized I was beginning to forget which ones I had done and what they were like. So, I thought I’d document them in an Excel sheet with short descriptions and ratings.
Then I asked myself: why Excel? Why not build a simple website so others could benefit from it as well?
On the very same day, Simone and I went on a hike and started expanding the idea. We thought: why stop at hikes? What about restaurants, beaches, and all the places we keep recommending to friends anyway? We’re constantly getting the same questions from people visiting us. And then came the bigger realization: what about events? They’re everywhere, scattered across WhatsApp groups, Instagram, Facebook, Meetup, and more. There’s no single place where you can easily see what’s happening on the island.
So, the idea evolved quickly: wouldn’t it make sense to bring all of this together in one place? And even better, not just as a website, but as an app you always have with you. By the end of that hike, the entire concept was basically there.From that point on, we started building a first prototype and that’s how Madeira Unlocked began. 🙂
5.What can users find in the app?
Madeira Unlocked is designed to make it easy to discover what’s happening on the island.
At its core, it’s a comprehensive event calendar that brings together concerts, festivals, sports meetups, yoga sessions, dance classes, networking events, and much more, all in one place.
Beyond events, the app also includes curated recommendations for hikes, activities, beaches, viewpoints, parks, and selected restaurants. The idea is to give people a simple way to explore Madeira without having to search across multiple platforms.
We built it for a broad audience, locals, expats, tourists, and digital nomads alike. Madeira has such a diverse and international community, so it was important for us to reflect that.
That’s also why the app is available in Portuguese, English, and German, with more languages planned.
The app is free to download and easy to access via the app stores: iOS, Android. and for those who want a bit more, there’s also a Premium Pass with additional benefits like partner discounts.
6.How can event organizers collaborate with you?
Event organizers can easily collaborate with us by adding and promoting their events directly in the app, and the best part is: event listings are completely free. To get started, they can onboard themselves via our Organizer Portal.
After registration, we do a quick check to ensure that the person is authorized to manage events for the respective organizer. This is usually combined with a short onboarding call. Once approved, organizers can independently create and manage their events.Events go live immediately after being published and are later reviewed by us to ensure overall quality and consistency.
7.What’s your motto in life?
Luckily, Simone and I share the same mindset: you only live once 🙂 We both try to make the most of that, not just for ourselves, but also for others, in whatever way we can.

Fortaleza do Pico in Funchal: History, Views & How to Visit
Perched high above the city, the Fortaleza de São João Baptista do Pico feels less like a building and more like a fixed point in time. No matter where you stand in Funchal, your eyes eventually find it. Solid, watchful, quietly dramatic. It has been there long before tourism maps and café terraces, and it will likely outlast them all.
A fortress with a story to tell
Long before Fortaleza do Pico became one of Funchal’s best viewpoints, it was built to defend the city.
After the corsair attack of 1566 exposed Funchal’s vulnerability, a network of fortifications was created to protect the bay. Fortaleza do Pico became a key part of that defence. Built first as a wooden outpost in the early 1600s, it was later rebuilt in stone and developed into a strategic stronghold overlooking the city.
Over the centuries, it served different roles, from military fortress to naval communications centre, known locally as Pico-Rádio.
Today, it stands as a Monument of Public Interest and one of Funchal’s most impressive historic landmarks.

Today: history with a view
Today, the Fortaleza do Pico is no longer about defence. It’s about presence and stunning views over the city. Around it, life happens.
Behind the fortress, there’s a café and a small playground where children play while adults sit with coffee or ice cream, looking out over the city. Tourists arrive by tuk-tuk. Locals walk up the steep calçada do Pico. Everyone ends up at the same view eventually.

This passion fruit pudding (pudim de maracujá) is a traditional dessert from Madeira and one of the most loved recipes in my family.
With its creamy texture and tropical flavor, this easy passion fruit dessert combines whipped cream, condensed milk, and fresh passion fruit juice for a perfectly balanced sweet and tangy treat.

The Secret: Fresh Passion Fruit Juice
The key to the best pudim de maracujá is fresh juice. I typically use about 10 passion fruits.
To prepare:
Cut the fruits in half
Scoop out the pulp
Strain to separate juice from seeds
Pro tip: Freeze extra passion fruit juice so you always have some ready for this recipe (you can also buy frozen passion fruits at local supermarkets)
Ingredients
For the pudding:
Juice of about 10 passion fruits
2 packs of cream
1 can of condensed milk
2 packet of pineapple gelatin
For the passion fruit topping:
3–4 passion fruits
½ cup of water
Sugar to taste
How to Make Passion Fruit Pudding
Whip the cream until light and fluffy.
Add condensed milk and mix gently until smooth.
On the side prepare the gelatin according to package instructions (2 packet per 500 ml of boiling water). Add the passion fruit juice into the gelatin and mix it well.
Let the gelatin + juice cool slightly, then mix it into the cream mixture.
Pour into a dish and refrigerate until set (about 3–4 hours).
Passion Fruit Syrup Topping
To make the topping:
Add ½ cup of water and the pulp of 3–4 passion fruits to a saucepan.
Add sugar to taste.
Simmer until slightly thickened.
Let it cool completely.
Pour the syrup over the chilled pudding before serving for a glossy, flavorful finish.

Back in 2018, some of you might remember the first FROM MADEIRA TO MARS t-shirt, a limited edition created with Jorge Rosa @walkingframe, inspired by the #frommadeiratomars concept, a celebration of creativity, travel, and possibility.
Today, I’m thrilled to share a brand new design by my longtime friend Duarte @duartemarotecamara, an architect and artist I’ve known since my teen days. He captured one of my favorite streets in Funchal, Calçada Santa Clara, turning it into wearable art.
